Near-field infrared imaging with a microfabricated solid immersion lens
We report imaging in the infrared with a microfabricated solid immersion lens. The integrated 15-mm-diameter lens and cantilever are fabricated from single-crystal silicon and scanned in contact with a sample to obtain an image. We demonstrate a focused spot size of l/5 and an effective numerical aperture of 2.5 with l59.3 mm light. The total power transmitted through the lens is a factor of 10...
متن کاملFrom near-field optics to optical antennas
July 2011 Physics Today 47 In a prophetic letter to Albert Einstein on 22 April 1928, Irish scientist Edward Hutchinson Synge proposed a microscopic imaging method in which an optical field scattered from a tiny gold particle could be used as a radically new light source. The gold particle, Synge argued, would act as a local probe of some sample of interest, with the scattered light transmitted...
متن کاملMagneto-optical micromechanical systems for magnetic field mapping
A new method for magnetic field mapping based on the optical response of organized dense arrays of flexible magnetic cantilevers is explored. When subjected to the stray field of a magnetized material, the mobile parts of the cantilevers deviate from their initial positions, which locally changes the light reflectivity on the magneto-optical surface, thus allowing to visualize the field lines. ...
متن کاملPlasmonic near-field transducer for heat-assisted magnetic recording
Plasmonic devices, made of apertures or antennas, have played significant roles in advancing the fields of optics and opto-electronics by offering subwavelength manipulation of light in the visible and near infrared frequencies. The development of heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) opens up a new application of plasmonic nanostructures, where they act as near field transducers (NFTs) to lo...
